He had a PET and MRI and thankfully everything checked out ok. The lesions are on top of his head and behind one ear. He has numerous questionable "bumps" on top of his head and only a handful have been biopsied, but nearly all those came back as melanoma. It sounds as though the doctors want to be on the safe side and remove a very generous area given the number of suspicious areas.
