Hi all.  I am another MDA patient.  I see Dr. Lucci(surg) and Dr. P Hwu(onc).  Stage IIIa, currently NED.  I have scans on Aug. 8 and see Dr. Hwu on the 9th.  I live NW of Houston near Cypress. Let me know if I can help in any way.  I will make one point–be prepared for the heat and humidity!  I have lived in the area my entire life and sometimes it gets to me.  At least we have A/C everywhere.

I would also like you to email me the report.  pbuckwood@sbcglobal.net   I was dx in Nov. 09, WLE, SNB–1 pos. then TLD none  pos.  That makes me IIIA.  Scans 2 weeks ago were negative.  Yea!  I have added some of the mentioned supplements and added more fruits/vegs but still eat meat and I do enjoy red wine daily. Thats where I get resveratol!

I am also 3A diagnosed Dec. 09.  I live in Houston as well and see Dr. Patrick Hwu at MDA.  I was offered the pegylated interferon trial too, but chose not to do it because I got a blood clot after my lymphadectomy and had to do 3  months of Fragmin injections.  Currently I am NED and go in for scans and derm. checks every 3 months.  I wasn't offered the HD interferon but after researching mel treatments and statistics I didn't consider it.  It really is a personal choice. 

I also try to eat healthy but still enjoy coffee and red wine.  I added Tumeric to my supplements because I read it can be beneficial in fighting melanoma.  My next scans are the week after Thanksgiving…so I am praying for NED.  Whatever trreatment (or none) you decide on I wish you  the best.

I had a similar experience with my husband Curtis who had surgery for an abdominal cancer.  The incision was 8-10" long.  He had surgery in another state and I wasn't there when they gave the instructions for the "wet to dry" technique.  So he and a friend told me how to do it.  I was nervous not by the incision but because of the chance of infection in what looked to me like a gaping wound!  The first time we went to a walk-in clinic.  I thought that by watching someone do it I could too.  Well, they didn't know what they were doing, even with Curtis telling them.  It annoyed both of us! At that point I decided I could do a much better job myself.   After the first couple of times we had our routine down. To this day I am surprised by how well the incision  healed w/o any infection. Just my experience.

I totally understand your feelings.  I can do things like that but couldn't be in the room for IV starts, Subclavian Caths, PICC lines etc.  I always get light headed.  Best wishes for quick healing.

I live in Houston and go to MDA also.  My last CT/MRI scans were on Aug. 17 and then I saw Dr. P Hwu the next day to get the scan results.  That has been my experience.  Scans one day, Dr visit the next.  I am 3A and currently NED since Jan/2010.
