Just a note of caution. Nodular melanoma does not follow any of the guidlines for standard superficial spreading melanoma. And it is commonly mistaken for other skin conditions.  Doctors misdiagnose or dismiss nodular type too often.  This is very dangerous since it grows very quickly and straight down. I would definitely follow up on this and if it doesn't "go away" like it should, and continues to grow in any way, I would have it removed regardless of what the Dr. says.

See my blog page on nodular and this page on skin checking!

But I sincerely hope it is something benign and will just go away with treatment!!!!

Statistics include all melanoma patients.  You may present with stage 0 but then later get another melanoma at a greater depth which would be the cause of the metastisis. This probably accounts for much of the 5%.  Since you have a 6% chance of getting a second melanoma once you have had it.  But my Doctor said, melanoma is an unpredictable beast.  If you look at people's stories on here, many were stage 1's that metastisis, so I wouldn't say it is always that they did it wrong, just that melanoma is unpredictable!  That is why if you have had it you should be careful and watching your skin and health for the rest of your life!

              Hope that helps!

Thanks so much for this info. I have dysplastic nevi syndrome and have had lots of this type removed. I had heard others getting WLE for them and was wondering if I should be concerned that none of mine have had any further surgery. Now I understand that it has to do with the margins that they took.  Thanks soooo much!!

There is less fear in knowledge.
