      Dear MPIP Community,

If you haven't already heard, the Surgeon General has issued a Call to Action to Prevent Skin Cancer. Please take a look at the MRF's press release to learn more about the Call to Action and what it means. The MRF commends the Surgeon General for issuing this statement and taking a great step toward identifiying important steps that will help reduce the rates of melanoma diagnoses.

      Sincerely,

      Shelby – MRF

Maybe it's time to realize what the real problem here is… and that is all the junk food and soda's and energy drinks and then using a tanning bed. The real problem is SUGAR… Period!  Artificial sugar, HF corn syrup and aspartame. All disease's especially cancer are caused by inflammation and sugar is the main cause of inflammation. I hope that someday they will survey the people who use a tanning bed to learn what they eat. Dr. Mercola has good info on a safe tanning bed at http://www.mercola.com

Not meaning to be disrespectful but I suggest you do your research before promoting the quackery of Dr. Mercola and his "safe" tanning beds. Ugh. I used tanning beds for 10 years, exercised almost daily and ate pretty damn clean and here I sit with a stage 3C melanoma diagnosis and 3 failed treatments and 5 recurrences. I know all cancer is a complex disease and there are a combination of factors contributing to it. Several triangulated, peer reviewed studies as well as the World Health Organization indicate that UV radiation is a carcinigen. Until I see scientifically, research-based data to suggest otherwise I will not promote tanning of any kind.

                    Hi Mary,

In my opinion the real quacks are the FDA, aka The Fraud and Death Administration in the natural health community. In North America any point  above Atlanta George does not have the required Sunshine to produce proper Vitamin D3 levels. Dr. Mercola is a pioneer in telling the truth about the real causes of  many diseases. Real vitamin D3 comes first from the SUN.  No Sun then use other means. Here are some examples about his advice.

                    Skin Cancer

Among the different types of skin cancer, melanoma is the most deadly. In vitro research conducted at Saarland University Hospital in Germany revealed that vitamin D lowered the spread of melanoma cells by up to 50%, and there have been other studies conducted elsewhere which have affirmed this finding.

                    Other Cancers

Other types of cancer which vitamin D has displayed preventive or protective benefits against include leukemia (blood cancer), pancreatic cancer, thyroid cancer, non-Hodgkin lymphoma and numerous others.

                    Conclusion

Dr. Joseph Mercola believes so strongly in the role of vitamin D in fighting cancer that all the patients at his wellness center are tested for blood levels of this vitamin (it is worthwhile to note that, while vitamin D is usually mentioned as a vitamin, it would be more accurate to refer to it as a hormone, as its characteristics more closely resemble the latter).

Indeed, an aggregated review of 63 previous studies discovered that the "evidence suggests that efforts to improve vitamin D status… could reduce cancer incidence and mortality at low cost, with few or no adverse effects."

When it comes to both cancer prevention and cancer treatment, it is clear that the humble vitamin D cannot be ignored.

One important thing to note is that aggressive oral supplementation of vitamin D can result in toxic overdose and should ideally be carried out under the guidance of a suitable health care practitioner. Undergoing tests on blood vitamin D levels would also be helpful.

                    Best wishes,

This comment honestly angered me. I’ve eaten clean my entire life!! I’m a vegetarian who eats very little dairy and absolutely no artificial sweeteners. I have always been very conscience about what I put in my body. I have spent years researching nutrition. And guess what, I’m stage 3 at a very young age. I totally agree that eating well has amazing positive effects on the body. But these types of comments just make people feel bad about themselves, like they caused themselves to get cancer because they drank diet soda. They are just not helpful at all.

Like one of the responders I too, have spent a life time eating right, running, avoiding sun exposure, etc, and still developed melanoma, even advancing to Stage IV.  Yet, I STILL embrace that life style and as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner encourage it in my patients and their families.  However, melanoma is a tricky beast.  Many factors figure into its development…with sun/sun bed exposure being just one of those.  That being said, the statement put forth by the Indoor Tanning Association is absolutely FALSE!!!!  We have proof that indoor and outdoor tanning increases the rates of melanoma.  We also know that the ITA has every reason ($$$$$$$$$) to try to convince people otherwise!  Here's just one source that clearly provides scientific evidence and data to support those facts:

As a conspiracy theorist he believes that the World Health Organizatin developed Aids as part of the New World Order's nefarious plan to take over the world by depopulating the earth. Source- Rational Wiki. I am posting anonymously because Dr. William Campbell Douglass may have spies reading this forum.
