      So, my husband Dave had a scan on June 14 for a "stuck feeling" in his throat.  His scan came back (I have listed the "final report") as follows:

      A mass is seen in the upper paratracheal region.  It's maximum size is approximately 3.6 x 3.4 cm.  This mass is most likely neoplastic lymph node.  A smaller, more cephaled node in the paratracheal region measures approximately 17 mm transversly. The upper lungs that are included here are grossly clear.

      He called his oncologist to ask about this, and they immediately set up an appointment to see the thoracic surgeon for a biopsy on Wednesday.  His appt with his regular oncologist was scheduled for 7/8, but he always receives a copy of all of his scan reports in the mail.  When he called they told him it could be anything of the following, in this order: Melanoma, Benign, or Lymphoma. 

      My question to all of you is this – has anybody had a lymph node of this size and shape be benign?  And if it is melanoma, where do we go from here?

              Almost sounds like mine! My doc said you have either lymphoma or melanoma…and at the time it was around 4.3 centemeters. Mine was in the right lower paratracheal region in a lymph node. That was in June 09. It was finally surgically removed in March 2010 and it was 6.8 in the longest area.  I want you to know this because I am also in a trial and have been NED ..no evidence of disease for 15 months. So if you get bad news, don't freak out like I first did- they said I had 6-9 months and here I am…:o) Lynn

                  Mariah,

                  All I can say is if it's melanoma, where you go from here is to a melanoma specialist. That will be vital. Get your husband and his records into the best hands you can. If you need help finding a specialist in your area go here, the list isn't all inclusive but you'll at least get e great idea of area facilities that have mel specs.

                      Thank you Lynn for your "take a deep breath" advice.  Funny how often I give that advice out, yet seem to have a difficult time doing just that.

                      And thank you as well Carol for the prayer.  Dave is being seen by a melanoma specialist at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, and he has been Stage III NED (after interferon) for 2.5 years now.

                        Thanks for the update Maria. I know it is impossible to not be worried right now and I am thinking of you.

                        I am urging my husband to call his doc after reading this because he has had a scratch like feeling in one side of throat for months. Did Dave have the same feeling or was it more like a lump in throat?

                          Actually Emily, for Dave it felt like something was there.  Like when he swallowed, he felt a lump.  He honestly has not felt it since he had his scan, although now his throat is just sore.  I don't know if it was symptom or not.  I will update you once we meet with the thoracic oncologist on Wednesday.  I am really trying not worry, but it's getting the best of me.
