I had my tumor from my back removed in october. Do they keep this tumor or just throw it out. They never tested to see if I was Braf and I was wondering if I still could have a second opinion on pathology if the tumor was kept in a lab. I know it’s late but I’m starting to doubt the pathology. It was positive for melanoma but was not really that detailed a report.

So was it a new primary? New diagnosis of melanoma? Or a recurrence of melanoma? New primaries are typically not tested for BRAF especially if they are thin. In general, it would only be the tumor from a recurrence that is tested. Yes, tissue sent to pathology is typically kept. What stage are you?

I’m stage 3b 1.7 depth ulcerated 1 micro met lymph node involved. I’m just questioning the ulcerated part since I seen pics on Internet and mine didn’t look like that. Mine started to bleed after a shower when I dried with towel. This is my primary. No reoccurrance yet. Knock on wood and praise the lord. -

You can't see ulceration. While some moles may be ulcerated and bleed, ulceration is something that can only be see by the pathologist. Many bleeding moles may be ulcerated, but some are not. Bleeding does not equal ulceration is what I should say. Ulceration is a microscopic determination of whether or not the epidermis intact.
Most likely, they would only check a recurrence for BRAF, not the primary.

I believe that pathology samples – like your tumour – are kept for a long time, so yes, go ask for a 2nd opinion or further testing on pathology.
