      Hi all,

This may seem off topic, but I am really trying to limit my exposure to anything that could be harmful to my skin.  Is anyone aware of any skin products and cosmetics that contain only natural ingredients?  I haven't used lotion or make-up for a while now since I realize my skin and body are absorbing whatever I put on it.  I would love to learn about a natural/non-toxic healthy product line.

      Thanks in advance,

      Maggie

How to Decipher "Natural" Ingredient Labels

Today I received the following email from a woman who had just received her Authentic Beauty Kit in the mail! She was a buzz of great questions looking for healthy alternatives to everyday beauty products and asked about her natural sunscreen wanting to know what I thought of it.

Here's the list of ingredients she sent looking for feedback:

It's probably worth mentioning that this was an "award-winning" sunscreen which claimed to have:

          • no animal products
          • no clove
          • no tea tree
          • no lavender
          • no petroleum oils
          • no parabens
          • no perfume
          • no petroleum
          • no DEA
          • no colors or dyes
          • no nanoparticles
          • no titanium dioxide
          • no dioxanes
          • no sulfates
          • no phthalates
          • no hydantoin DMDM (formaldehyde)
          • no propylene glycol
          • no soy
          • no strawberry
          • aaaand no peanut, gluten or dairy!

          WHEW!

Just looking at that list would make you dizzy! You can imagine what's lurking in conventional sunscreens if they're writing all of that stuff to reassure customers that it's safe and natural!

For most natural living enthusiasts, this looks like a pretty good option. It certainly is when compared to its petrochemical-laced, totally toxic counterparts from the local pharmacy. However, because the package has focused so much on what is NOT in it, you're much less likely to look at the ingredients and ask what IS in it?

          Saying what something ISN'T
doesn't tell you what it IS.

By making big statements about what's NOT in the sunscreen, you'll be feeling so relieved and reassured, you're NOT likely to ask what these ingredients are or why they're in there:

          • Aqua (Water)
          • Capric Triglyceride
          • Cetearyl Glucoside
          • Cetearyl Alcohol
          • Vegetable Glycerin
          • Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate
          • Polysilicone-15
          • Stearyle Dimethicone
          • Gylcerly Isostearate
          • Polyhydroxy Stearic Acid
          • Sodium Phytate
          • Xantham Gum

Given that ingredients are listed in order of volume contained in the product, it would appear that the bulk of this award-winning "natural" sunscreen is composed of tap water, highly refined and processed versions of coconut and/or palm kernal oil (to give it a nice "silky" feeling), alcohol and glycerin (created by means of chemical process that usually requires drain cleaner to be carried out).

I'm not looking for a "natural" version of sunscreen anymore than I'm looking to eat organic Oreo Cookies. You've been marketed the need for sunscreen through a fear of the sun–something vital to your good health and overall well-being.

If, when you Google the individual names of your ingredients, you don't get a picture of plants, flowers, trees, bark, seeds, roots or leaves…

…don't put it on your skin.

Rather than lather yourself with a silky sunscreen loaded with unidentifiable ingredients (even if it does come from a "natural" health food store) buy a good sun hat, or a long sleeved summer/bathing shirt or sit under a tree when the sun gets too hot?

The biggest myth about most conventional cosmetics is that you don't need it in the first place!

Why go looking for "natural" versions of an already unnatural thing. The same is true for exfoliators, wrinkle-creams, toners, cuticle removers, hair tonics, skin tighteners, skin brighteners, etc. Authentic beauty is simple and it works!

Thanks, Gene.  Cosmetics are something I rarely wear so I don't want to buy a $200 beauty kit.  I have also found recipes online.  I am hoping someone in the Melanoma community that uses cosmetics knows of an existing product line they would recommend.  Or else I guess I'll just try some of the recipes I've found.
