My step-daughter, who is eight months pregnant, has just had a preliminary diagnosis of Stage 1B melanoma on the sole of her foot. Apparently she will have a wide excision and a sentinal lymph node biopsy within the next couple of weeks. She meets with specialists next week to make a plan, but meanwhile, we are all very worried for her and the baby. It would be great if someone who's been in a similar situation could share their experience.

        Hi,

I was seven months pregnant with my oldest daughter when I had a mole biospied/diagnosed as melanoma stage 1.  It was on my upper back.  I had the removal with local anesthetic.  We got clear margins and baby was fine.  She just turned 11 at the beginning of May.  I went 10 years with no suspicious moles and was always careful in the sun.  I wish your daughter in law all the best.  I know it can be very frightening being diagnosed while pregnant.  She must be scared.  I certainly was.

This is reassuring–thank you for sharing this. My step-daughter will probably have her baby a couple weeks before the due date, before undergoing the wide excision and lymph node biopsy under general anaesthetic, so her baby will have experienced what your baby did (biopsy with local anaesthetic and melanoma stage 1). We'll find out more next week. It's her first. It is scary!

Hello! I found my first melanoma, stage 1B, shortly after the birth of my first child. I had a WLE, SLNB, and a PET that all came back clear. Then, during my second pregnancy I found an enlarged lymph node – my melanoma had returned. I underwent a complete lymph node dissection at 23 weeks. Baby did great and was born completely healthy at 37 weeks! He's now two and rules the house!

            Best of luck,

            Ashley
