      Hi all:

It's been 4 months since my WLE & lymph node dissection. I recently had 2 urine tests come back positive for Melanin, has anyone else experienced this?

I'm hoping it's some supplement I'm taking that has caused a false positive.

      Thanks

      Annie

I've honestly never heard of a urine test for anything related to melanoma either diagnostically or prognostically.  What has your doctor said?

I am still seeing the surgeon that did the WLE, graft & resection, he ordered the urine test.  I just saw my oncologyst, and am having at CT on Thusday just to rule out any mets.

Yes, melanoma (especially tumors in the kidney or bladder) can cause elevated melanin in the urine. But so can a variety of drugs and some foods. I think you're right– this is most probably due to something in your diet. However, you would be wise to get to the bottom of it.

I guess my question remains…. WHY are they doing a urine test?  Where was your primary?  Are you stage III or stage IV?  I understand if you were stage IV with bladder/kidney issues, but a urine test isn't exactly standard for most melanoma warriors.  Mostly curious – but anything suppements you eat can cause funky results on one test or another.

Ok, found this.  I guess melanin in the urine can also be indicative of liver involvement.  But it says the test is rarely done (hence my confusion) because there are better diagnostic tools.

Hi Janner, I am also confused, but my oncologyst is ordering a CT just to be safe.

I'm stage 111a, primary was lower left arm, sentinel was positive, dissection was negative.

I think I need to break up with my surgeon, and just stick to oncologyst.  Too many cooks, you know……

                                        I'll update when I have info….thanks
