I saw doc today before my final ipi infusion on Wednesday. Thyroid function is off so I'm going on thyroid meds starting tomorrow. Onc said this would be forever and a common side effect of ipi. She felt this is most likely an immune response. I have no idea….I've felt really good since treatment started. I've had some ongoing fatigue, few dry itchy patches of skin…mostly on ears and cramping day of and day after infusion. Outside of that, I can't complain at all. Anyone else have similar side effect with thyroid? Didn't seem like big deal at all. My thought was…if drug is working and I can get past mel…..then I'm good.
Anyway…looking forward to last treatment…scan….Xmas break and then get ready to check in for IL-2 right after New Year which I understand is no treat. I'll do what I can to beat the beast down!!!! Praying for success and well wishes for all melanoma warriors out there.
Josh

When the data from all the participants in clinical trial E1609 are plotted, I'll be the dot way out in right field. After 2 infusions of 3 mg ipi per Kg body weight, my immune system went haywire. Long story short, I was in hospital for 25 days with ulcerative colotis. I had 2 infusions of Remicade to deal with my immune reaction, 9 transfusions to replace the blood lost from intestinal (colon) bleeding, and because of massive doses of prednisone which shut down my adrenal glands, orthostatic hypotension. I've been home 6 weeks, The prednisone is being reduced 5 mg every 5 days. I should be off it by February. Then I'll be able to have adrenal function tests. I'm following the colotis diet. No dairy, no raw vegetables that are fiberous (celelry, borccoli stems) no coffee, wine, nuts… I have started to see a physical therapist to get the strenght in my legs back so I can get out of a chair without doing mini push ups, walk up stairs not going step together step, and stand for a period of time without having my legs shake. My goal is to be able to fly to California in March for my 72nd birthday and visit my grandchildren. I hope to be able to get a flu shot so I can get on a plane. The gastroenterologist and endoconologist are working with the oncologist and dermatologist and are a good team. My husband is my rock and my daughters my cheerleaders. I don't regret participating in the clinical trial. The irony is that I was really glad that I was randomized into arm C, which I told my grandson was like being sorted into Ravenclaw. (Arm A 10 mg ipi is Giyffindore and Arm B interferon is Huffepuff.) I've got a lot of work to do. But it can be done and I'll do it!
