      Hi All,

My dad, Stage IV mel with mets in the adrenal glands, began ipi 5 days ago. He is in extreme abdominal pain and had night sweats last night. Dr says this is an indication the ipi is working. Has anyone here had  this experience?

He also said the tumor on his groin is slightly inflamed and sensitive to touch.

Thanks in advance for your input!

          Hi Maggie,

That is definately a quick response!  I just started ipi as well 6 days ago and have experienced nothing. My Dr. said I shouldn't feel any side effects this early, but everyone is different.  I really hope this is a good indication that the ipi is working for your Dad.

          Best of luck!

Abdominal pain can be a side effect of ipi and can indicate colitis.  There does appear to be an association between occurence of side effects and response.  Regardless, "extreme" abdominal pain still needs to be addressed.  Is the doctor doing anything about his pain?

                  Hi Maggie —

A week into IPI therapy, I began to experience a fairly strong rash on my forearms.  The next day, we excised a tumor from my neck.  Pathology showed strongly increased lymphocyte presence and only a small area of focal activity (I think that means my white cells were killing the tumor).

From what I understand, tumors responding to ipi can swell for a while as the white cells arrive to fight the melanoma.  His results may actually be quite encouraging.

Best of luck and wishes of success for him, and for you.
