After doing so much reading on melanoma after being diagnosed stage 1b- does your immune system truly help fight off melanoma? It seems that there are so many contradictory statements. Also- if your immune system is healthy- could it kill any random melanoma cells that may be floating around in your body still? I'm just trying to grasp all of this.

From my understanding yes..I am currently fighting with an Immunotherpy called Yervoy..They say that a boost in your immune system could help your good cells fight off the cancer cells..I will be doing my second dose of treatment Tomorrow..I did the 30 day interferon and it did not work for me..I am stage 3 C..Good luck

I think so. Your immune system is the cornerstone to your health. The body was built to heal itself. If you can help keep it as strong as possible, I think it makes sense that it would have a better chance at fighting all things that are going wrong.

The short answer to your question is yes. I think it's undeniable, and the recent advancements in immunotherapy prove this, that our immune systems are capable of fighting off melanoma. In my opinion there's only a few proven ways you can maximize your immune system: Good rest, good diet, exercise, and reduce stress. Many believe that you can help your immune system with supplements but there's very smart people on both sides of this argument so that is a personal choice. Will doing all this guarentee your melanoma won't return? Unfortunately no. There are no guarantees in life and that is especially true with melanoma. I believe it definitely improves your odds though. For some reason you developed melanoma and the difficult to answer question is why. Why didn't your immune system recognize, attack and remove the melanoma cells from your body. It could be because you have a "tricky" mutation of melanoma. It could be because your immune system was momentarily compromised which allowed the melanoma cells to get a foothold. It may be an inherited genetic characteristic of your immune system. You'll probably never know the answer to that question and hopefully it will never return.
I think you are very smart to be asking the questions you are right now. I was stage Ib back in 2006 and looking back I wish I would have asked this question and changed a lot of my life style choices. If you are really interested in the subject I recommend a book by David Servan-Schreiber called "Anti-Cancer, A New Way of Life". It is outstanding book. I've made significant changes to my diet the last couple years and although I can't be sure that it's helping my fight, I think it is and at the very least I feel fantastic. Best of luck to you.

Thank you so much for your thoughts! You are right that I will never know for sure and there are no guarentees- just trying to give myself a boost. I'm wondering if my melanoma took hold become I'm a teacher ( you know all of the colds/everything nasty that can go with that :)) and pregnant. I guess not a good combo for fighting melanoma.
I will check out that book. I just googled it and will be looking into purchasing it for sure! I'm glad things are going well for you! I pray that it continues to go well!

I'm not just blaming my immune system. I did have a few sunburns as a kid- not a ton- but a few. I'm sure they both play an important part.

I belive it does also, two years ago (iwas 48 yrs old) i got chicken pox and this past Dec i had pneumonia..I was also a sun worshiper..Back in Jan i was diagnosed with stage 3 C melanoma..I had a brown spot on my jawline that didn't start changing until about a year ago so i believe both are a big factor ..

MY primary melanoma was never found. Last year a 2.5 cm x 1.4 cm (25 mm x 14 mm) melanoma tumor was found in my left parotid gland. The rest of the entire gland and the neck lymph nodes were clear. I entered a clinical trial and after two 3 mg Yervoy infusions, I had an irAE (immune related adverse event). My irAE was very extreme. I was hospitalized for a month. My daughter thinks I must have a very responsive immune system. Her reasons 1) The parotid melanoma seemed to be self contained; 2) The melanoma that should have been on face or scalp was never found despite semiannual or quarterly visits to the dermatologist for my numerous basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas; 3) I have survived several anaphylactic reactions (peanuts). I still may have minute mm melanoma cells floating around in my system. Whether the Yervoy and my immune system are still effective time will tell. I'm not obsessive about it.
