Over the past few months, several marketing companies have recruited people via the bulletin board to participate in paid marketing research.

      Three questions.

Did you respond to the post, did you participate and did you get paid?

I am somewhat concerned about patient exploitation occuring here that benefits commercial enterprise.

No, I do not work for the MRF, but I do suspect pharma creeping in here and I do not like it, and it needs to be rooted out on any  patient forum before it takes seed.

I did participate, and I got paid.  Pharma companies are helping me pay ma bills.

I was happily exploited to the tune of $200/hr.

oh! I just realized. The one I participated in was from a referral from another patient.

but I did see it on here later

Did not participate.  would not unless they come from MRF and then still not likely.

Participated in three.  In all they were good experiences.  Have not been paid for the last one yet (2 months).  So far a string of excuses.

I will participate again, but make sure that the payment follows in a reasonable time.

Jerry, same here – I am only somewhat relieved to know I'm not the only one who hasn't yet been paid for the last survey.  Maybe we should take turns and call Christine every single day…devil

From a larger perspective, I don't object to marketing companies using the occasional forum post to recruit respondents.  I am happy they are realizing they need a patient's perspective.

                                                  Charlie,

Thanks for asking these questions.  I believe that all of those companies requesting surveys asked our permission before posting on the bulletin board.  In the future though, when companies ask us about that, would you (everyone else please answer as well) prefer that the MRF actually posts the information?  We generally check into the company, but then make them post their questions/information themselves.  We can certainly ask them not to post on the bulletin board so that those types of things come from us instead.  Let me know and we can figure out the best way to go about that, keeping in mind that we won't let these types of requests from companies get out of control.  Thanks so much!

I don't think it's too likely that research into the perspectives of MM patients will get "out of control" any time soon.

Personally I would prefer that you keep the posting the way it is now.  All the firms that post are reputable and we certainly are not under seige, so why add another layer.

Also, there is a chance that some firms may skip posting to the MRF altoghether if you add a layer.  We are not the only place that a companies recruiters can find participants.  Why take the chance of some loosing the opportunity.

On a personal note I would do another survey with the company that has the late payment.  I have recieved a response and a reasonable explaination.  It's just that in the future I would make sure to have the payment info fully understood in the pre-interview.  It's not a big problem.

If you make too many rules then you will need rules to make rules.

That way, the MRF does not risk any direct involvement beyond permission to post.

If patients find a huckster afoot, we can pass that along.

That way, the MRF does not risk any direct involvement beyond permission to post.

If patients find a huckster afoot, we can pass that along.

Actually, I think it is great that somebody is seeking patient input beyond a vial of blood and lab experiment …………and offering money to do so.
