I am 32 years old and have had several moles taken for biopsy over the last 15 or so years. A couple of weeks ago I had a mole near the back side of my knee taken for biopsy. This mole was approx 2 mm in diameter and had even borders. But it was very dark, but consistent in color. My derm had seen this mole before several times so Im not sure why he decided to take it off.The biopsy came back as “Pre cancerous”. My question is this the same as being Atypical?
Also I was told after the full excision that the tissue will be sent to pathology. But if it was already said to not be melanoma in the initial biopsy then why is post excision pathology required? Should I be concerned or is this routine for Atypical mole excision?

The pathology report itself will say dysplastic or atypical, it won't say precancerous. Any time they remove tissue, it is standard to send it to pathology. The skin in a wide excision isn't analyzed as completely as a biopsy but the do typically check the margin area specifically. While the biopsy said clean margins, it isn't a "guarantee" and that is why they excise more tissue.

So no need to worry if the first biopsy was non melanoma? -

No. This is just precautionary in case there happened to be a cell or two missed. Even if you didn't have it, it would probably be fine. But depending on how atypical the original lesion was, it's just conisdered good practice to have those extra margins.
