Hi,
My father has stage IV melanoma. Cancer is now in his lung, liver and bone. He had two Yervoy infusion already. He has side effects such as fatigue, fever, and lost of apetite. As Christmas is coming, I am thinking of taking my dad and mom to a sun destination, such as Mexico or Dominican. But I am not sure if such a vacation is going to put any risk on my father's cancer? Or there is no effect of sun on my father's case already?
Thanks for your advice.
Ady

Ipi isn’t going to add to your father’s risk in the sun. I would invest in some good high SPF clothing, hats & sunscreen and enjoy every moment away! -

Ady,
I believe that melanoma is caused by low vitamin D-3 levels… In my case, from the LACK of sunshine.
Since you are from Canada. I would be willing to bet that your dad is very vitamin D-3 deficient!
=========================================
100 Million American's have Vitamin D deficiency, due to Sunscreen and Sun Avoidance, by Dr. Oz
Doctor's now recommend 10-15 minutes of direct UV exposure without sunscreen. Vitamin D from the sun can lower your risk of Breast Cancer, Prostate Cancer, Heart Disease, Colon Cancer, Autoimmune Disease, Diabetes, and even Melanoma by over 50%. You get 90% of your Vitamin D from the sun through photosynthesis. http://www.vitamindcouncil.org

Your sun exposure needs to be daily to keep up the Vitamin D levels. My husband worked 40 years on mostly midnight turn and some afternoon turns so he did not get the proper Vitamin D. Now he takes a daily supplement and has good levels and trys to get (weather permitting) 10 to 15 minutes of good sunlight. We live in NE Ohio so not much time to get the real stuff. Also low Vit. D can lead to broken bones, osteoporosis and many other ailments. I know as my Vitamin D was very low and when I fell I broke my arm and now have Titanium implants.

It's nice that you're taking your dad and mom to a sunny destination. With Yervoy, I'd just make sure that any side effects are under control. As far as the sun goes, find a shady spot to relax in and use plenty of sunscreen. You can also buy clothing with SPF 50 built into the fabric. This way you don't have to worry about it washing off from an area not easily accessible for re-application — such as your back. Check out Coolibar's web site. They have all sorts of items for sale, including swim suits.
Most importantly, just enjoy yourselves!

Hi Ady,
What a caring daughter you are!
What infusion will your dad have had when you plan to go?
Not to be a downer, but I would be remis by not telling you that if a person has serious side effects w/Yervoy, as I did, they appear after the 3rd infusion. I was very sick with colitis and then adrenal insufficiency.
Hopefully all will be fine, and you will have a great trip, but it never hurts to take precautions.
All the best,

I had vacationed in Florida while on Ipi. My side effects were under control and I had a blast! As always – check with your doctors for their input as well.
As others have suggested, I wore sun safe clothing, a wide brimmed hat and high rated sunscreen. I swam a lot wearing a 'rash shirt' (bought from Coolibar) like a lot of surfers wear. FYI – Columbia Sportswear makes quite a few shirts, pants, and shorts now available and reasonably priced at most large Sporting Goods chains, as does Bass Pro Shops (fishing sportswear), in addition to Coolibar and other specialty firms.

It is the B raf drug (Zelboraf) that would cause you to avoid sun. I am a red head, fair skinned and freckles. Had very bad sun burns as a kid. My melanoma began on my neck, where I had the worst sun damage. I never avoided the sun until my adult years. My vot D level is very low and my oncologist and endocrine doc put me on Vit D3. 10,000 IU daily. It still remans very low. My doc believes suppliments are better than the damaging rays of the sun.
