I have heard that local reoccurances at the primary site are common….but do they worsen the prognosis as far as metastasis to organs go? My Dr. did not change me from stage 3, but I am wondering if there may be more liklihood of further spreading because of these local reoccurances. Almost afraid to ask…don't want to borrow trouble, but thought someone out there might have experience ….

There is a big chance the melanoma will return.  I found a study that said 11% will not see the melanoma again, the rest will.  You are stage IIIc?  I just wrote about this, I wish there were more options for that stage.  I hope this doesn't scare you, but when I had my local reoccurrence I really wanted to know how aggressive I should be.  Good luck!

Are you saying the study said that only 11% of melanomas won't recur – the rest will?  For any stages?

That was just for those who had local recurrences and were stage IIIc.  It was a paper on how often to do scans on the different stage III patients.  It was just looking at patients at Sloan Ketterling, I tried to find it, my Dr. printed it out for me, I will keep looking.

Thank you for looking…I was IIIb but I guess I am IIIc now that I have had local reoccurances???….I am 65…don't know whether to try a systemic approach..radiation…Drs. say different things….One specialist says to be vigilant, and that surgery is still my best option…I am scared it will travel to distant areas…..
