too much weight loss/neurological problems

      hi , i am a spouse of a stage 3b melanoma patient, he has been on treatment with interferon for 4 months, he has lost 33 lbs (weight is 157), is this amount of weight loss normal, he is getting too thin, the doctors have took him off the interferon shots for a week, he goes next week to see his oncologist, im just concerned that this weight loss will get even worse, has anyone been thru this with the weight ? im very concerned, i know he needs to take this, he has 8 months left, what do they do in a situation of weight loss?

          While doing interferon is a personal decision, there is some good evidence that it's beneficial effects are minimal.  You might want to do a search on the board to see what others say.  Where are you being seen?

                Hi,

                I am stage 2c and have been doing interferon.  I only have 12 weeks left of treatment.  In the 40 plus weeks of treatment I have been on I have lost 65 pounds.  Frankly being previously slightly obese i could stand to loose the weight. I think it is common to have weight loss as the interferon effects your thyroid.  You also don't want to eat.

                I made the choice to do interferon based on conversations here on this web site.  One person indicated that she had nine years of being cancer free due to interferon treatment and the other indicated that interferon is more effective when your tumor is ulcerated(mine was).  It was the best decision I have ever made.

                Interferon is the only currently offered treatment for stage 2b and stage 3.  I have a family and need to find ways to extend my life to be there for my young son.  It made me very sick, but I am glad I did it.
