      Hi,

I have to travel over 180 miles round trip to my oncologist on a regular basis. With the cost of gas, we are going broke!

Does anyone know of any organization(s) that helps cancer patients pay for the cost of gas.

      Thanks

      Michael

Your local cancer society should have some funds available, I live in a small community and we do have such funds. You may also ask at a local St Vincents, or community action. Hope this helps some.

American Cancer Society should be able to send you a gas gift card to help since you’re traveling so far. You can also ask them about helping to pay some utility bills. They connected us with a local group that paid our utility bills for one month.

You might even check with the social worker at your hospital…many times they have list of organizations that can help you. The social worker at our hospital even helped with some of our medical bills and then gave us a list of other places to contact for help.

The other thing to do (which is difficult to do) is ask your support group. We have a group of friends and family that are always willing to help us out. In the past, we have asked for gas cards, and several families have sent us cards to help out.

Don't forget that depending on your personal situation, your mileage could be a deductable medical expense in computing your income tax liability. I know I was surprised at how huch it added up to when completing my tax return for last year.
