My father has metastatic melanoma. Originally diagnosed in 1982 but relapsed in 2014. He has had several brain tumors (treated with gamma knife) and he has been on yervoy (still had spread) keytruda (worked really well but caused colitis) and now Opdivo. The opdivo has caused less side effects but now there is concern for 2 more brain tumors and melanoma in his cerebral spinal fluid. He had been seen this whole time at UVA but I want him to get a second opinion. Can anyone please recommend melanoma specialists for advanced melanoma? Preferably on the east coast but would be willing to travel.

Also, if any body had had experience with melanoma in the CSF and tell me about it if appreciate it.

      Thank you!!

Wolchok certainly has a great reputation.  You might also consider:

                Jeffrey Weber at NYU

                Mario Sznol at Yale

                Suzanne Topalian at John Hopkins

Stephen Hodi at Dana Farber Cancer Institute/Harvard

                Hope that helps.  Celeste

Another option at Hopkins is Evan Lipson.  I've heard good things about him.

                            Hi Celeste,

I was told by one of the nurses at Hopkins that Suzanne Topalian no longer sees patients. Her focus apparently is on research. I've been going there for 5.5 years and have never even set eyes on her. Evan Lipson and William Sharfman see patients. Both are great!

When I call these center's, I understand I state that we want a second opinion and then they will request the medical record's.  Is this correct?  Will they then just put him with whoever is available or can I request a specific doctor?

Sorry you're dealing with this.  1982 to 2014?? that's just nuts.  i didn't know any kind of cancer could come back 30+ years later.  that shows once you have it, you always have it somewhere in your body, just lying dormant, always possible to strike again. very mentally hard to live with that

I have been seeing Dr. Flaherty at Mass General in Boston. He's an amazing doc with a fantastic team. He's a little difficult to schedule, though, since he's also into research, but worth it. I can also personally speak for the neuro team there – it's one of the top 10 neurosurgical departments in the country.

I wish you and your father all the best!
