Just wondering if anyone has had to deal with high ammonia levels. My dads in the hospital now because he is so confused and disoriented. Just looking for some guidance.

Severe liver or kidney disease can lead to high ammonia levels.  Need to treat the cause, but there are medications to help lower the levels as well as some dietary changes.  Protein breakdown will lead to high nitrogen levels that is typically handled by those organs.  When they fail, it causes problems.

Porto-systemic shunts in the liver in this case probably aquired can do the same thing.

I hope they got to the root of the problem and he is doing better.  The brain hates ammonia which easily passes through the blood / brain barrier leading to symptoms.  We see this in cattle that get too much ammoniated hay.  It makes them bonkers!
