Hi. My name is Brandi and I am 24 years old. I have had a mole on my back since I could remember. It used to be a perfectly circle brown mole. Now, not so much. My stepmom has been telling me since I was 12 that I needed it checked out. Actually, I can’t wear anything backless anymore cause even strangers who have seen it have pulled me to the side and told me it looked dangerous. I am not quite sure. It has changed shaped for years but I never paid much attention. About 2 months ago, my brother noticed it and told me that it had started to turn black in a part of it. Today I felt it and it had grown a lump on it. Should I be worried? Should I see a doctor? I also have another mole on my jaw line that has started to look like it is spreading color and now I am having jaw problems where my jaw will lock and I can’t open it for a while. Am I crazy? Should I get these checked out?

Hi Brandi,
Thanks for your post. Let me start by saying we are not doctors at the MRF and we cannot make a medical diagnosis.
It is our recommendation that if you notice any changes in existing moles or the appearance of a new mole, that you bring it to the attention of a dermatologist right away. If you can find a dermatologist who specializes in skin cancer and/or melanoma, that would be even better. You can have the dermatologist take a look at both of the moles you are worried about. It's best to get anything suspicious looked at by a professional so you can catch melanoma early and also so you can give yourself peace of mind if it is nothing.
Here is a page on our website that you might find helpful:

Please don't hesitate to contact me at education@melanoma.org if you have additional questions.
Sincerely,
