I have been being treated for a fungus under the nail on my big toe for 3 or 4 months. In the past month, not only has it not gotten better but it is changing a lot. I have an appointment with a podiatrist in 1 1/2 weeks but hate the wait. A spot started that looked kind of brown, it now takes up half of the toenail and keeps getting darker. The cuticle and surrounding skin is also getting dark (pretty quickly) and today I noticed an almost yellow small circle in the middlevof the black area. I’m trying not to worry but not sure that I like how fast it is changing. Has anyone seen anything like this? It is very ugly but I would post a pic if I knew how. Any info or opinions are appreciated, thanks!!

Hi Andrea,
We're these changes noted by the doctor treating you for the fungus? In any case, if you're worried, make an appointment with a dermatologist and get the area checked. I'm not sure how to post picks, but you can also look up subungual melanoma on Google, etc.
good luck!

It is the same doctor, he agrees that it is changing. I have googled it, read about it and looked at pictures. I’m worried because it looks just like some of the pictures. It is more a spot though and a lot of info says you often have a vertical dark line, which I have never had. Thanks! -

just a quick fyi – podiatrists are able to biopsy the spot (my step-dad is a podiatrist and actually had something about melanoma under the toe nail on his board exams years ago)… Since you already have an appointment with a podiatrist, and it may take longer to get in with a derm, I would def go ahead and see the podiatrist….. and maybe schedule with a derm in the mean time so you have an appointment in case you need it.

I susspect thaat youhave also looked up the term Acral lentigimous melanoma of which subungual melanoma is a subset.
IF it is determined to be any of the melanomas get follow up. If acral/subungual melanoma, the removed tissue should also be checked for the c-kit onco-0verespression. This provides info as to whether the C-=kit inhibitors may stand a chance of helping/ -

I have been doing some research but trying to not read too much until I see the podiatrist. Still hoping that it is fungus or something (never thought that I would say that) but it has quite a few signs that make it appear as melanoma. Thank you for the information, it is greatly appreciated.
Inside of the black area, there are some odd shapes and different colors appearing. I have noticed this in the last couple of days. -
